I am excited to start another school year and to meet a new group of students. Below is what I expect us to strive for. We may not perform at an "A+ level" at all times (including myself) but we can strive for the best and learn from our mistakes so we can do better next time.
MATERIALS
Students are expected to bring the following items to class every day. Please make sure students have extra pencils, erasers, and paper.
1. Social Studies Binder with extra paper
2. Planner
3. At least 2 pencils with erasers
Other items students may find useful: colored pencils, index cards, highlighter
BINDER
Students will use their social studies binders everyday. It is their responsibility to place the papers in the appropriate tabs as directed.. It will have the following tabs in it to help them stay organized.:
1. JS/Current: This is where students will keep papers we will be needing in the next few class periods to finish activities. It is also where they will keep their jumpstart paper for the week.
2. HW: any work they need to finish or complete at home should go in this tab (if students choose to have a designated homework folder for all classes they may place their work in there but should be sure they have all items they need from their binder)
3. Study: items in this tab are what students need to spend their most time studying for quizzes and tests. It is highly encouraged for students to regularly study these items throughout the unit. For some students this might be once a week while others may find a few minutes every other night works better.
4. Store: This is where completed work will be. Parents who wish to see students graded work may look in this tab for that work.
5. Paper: Students will store their blank paper behind this tab. students want to start with about 1/2 a package of paper in this tab and will need to refill it throughout the year.
HOMEWORK
Students are responsible for recording homework assignments in their planner daily (they are to write “none” on days when no assignments are given). Parents are encouraged to check planners regularly in order to help students utilize this organization strategy. Homework may require students to complete an assigned task (worksheet, writing assignment, etc.) or to study information to prepare for upcoming quizzes or tests. I highly encourage students to study information from the unit as we progress versus waiting until the unit test. Most assigned tasks are due the following class period unless otherwise directed.
LATE WORK
1. Assignments not completed by the start of class will be considered late.
2. Students may be assigned to skills class if the assignment is not turned in on time.
3. Late assignments will be considered for 70% credit if turned in within one week
ABSENCE
Students are required to communicate with their teachers prior to planned absences and immediately upon return from unplanned absences. Parents are welcome to email us to let us know their student will be absent but in an effort to encourage student responsibility and communication skills they need in life we ask that students approach their teachers to ask for homework.
If you know you are going to be absent:
1. Get your assignment before you leave.
2. Turn in any assignments that will be due during your absences before you leave.
3. Visit with teacher before school or after school, not in the middle of class.
If you had an unplanned absence:
1. GET WORK from the make-up work folder before school the morning you return
2. TURN IN ASSIGNMENTS due while you were gone before school the morning you return.
3. COMMUNICATE with teacher about when the work is due and any questions you have
a. Students have two days for the first day they are absent, plus one day for every additional missed day, to complete and hand in work.
b. Example 1: If you miss class on Tuesday and return Wednesday, your work will be due by 3:45 p.m. Thursday
c. Example 2: If you miss Monday through Wednesday and return on Thursday your work is due by 3:45 on Tuesday of the next week.
4. For long-term absences, additional time may be given if properly requested.
*Students can also find assignments on my website if they are able to work on making up work prior to getting their assignments from the make-up work folder. They still need to grab their items out of the folder when they return to school to make sure everything printed appropriately.
